It’s often said that there’s nothing quite like your first love, and while that is certainly true, what does that mean, if anything, about what happens when you fall in love a second time? Men and women alike generally agree that the joys and heartbreaks we experience when we dip our toes into the pools of dating and relationships for the first time are uniquely intense. Nothing feels as sweet as the first time you fall in love.
It’s like a whole new part of you opens up in every possible way. The same can be said for the feelings you experience when that relationship ends. It feel as though you’ll never be the same, and in many ways, that’s true. Nothing helps us grow and change as people quite the way that falling in love for the first time does. It’s an experience that is probably as close as it gets to universal.
However, we might not know as much about what men learn from their first loves as we do about how our sisters, cousins, and girlfriends learned from there own. That’s probably because for men, few things are more terrifying than laying open their emotions and their heart to anyone, regardless of their gender. While it’s perfectly healthy to talk about this stuff, many men have a hard time talking these subjects over unless they’re doing it with a close and deeply trusted friend or partner.
Even then, many will still censor themselves, as they have been conditioned by our society to believe that doing so could possibly cause you to think less of them and their “manliness. Cultural conditioning can be extremely tough for individuals to shed in practice. That said, if you’ve always wanted to know how men think falling for their first love compares with a second or third or fourth, you’re in luck!

Love at second sight: why second love can be stronger and last longer
This often results in years of wondering what would have happened if you had tried to work things out and stayed together? Wondering then turns into pining, and then suddenly, that person becomes your Moby Dick. The one that got away. After years of ruminating on this past relationship, many couples opt to give it another go, and surprisingly, a lot of them make it for the long haul this time. According to Dr. But what does it mean to get back together for the right reasons?
Dating the second time around. By Stephanie Chen, CNN. February 11, 9:24 a.m. EST. Rhonda Hayes was married 25 years before her husband died.
As a matchmaker and dating agency owner, I have heard this question so many times over the years, as I have helped many bereaved people to move on after a loss. The loneliness that can descend after losing a husband or partner can be particularly acute, and it is especially hard when your relationship was a very long-standing one. When marriages of 30 or 40 years or even longer are suddenly snatched away, it is a seismic shock to your existence.
All those years spent living, loving, laughing, and crying together are suddenly history, never to come back. It is as if a chapter has firmly closed on your book of life. Even after a prolonged illness and facing the finality of death, the shock can induce delayed waves of grief. And then time works its wonders. Bereavement counsellors tell us that there are five stages to work through — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance — and indeed I have witnessed this on numerous occasions.
From that calmer state of mind you will then start to wonder what the next chapter in your life can offer, whether you want to make changes, and ultimately, whether you want to start looking for a new partner to share your future with. I have found that normally, somewhere between the first and second year after a death, the bereaved person is ready to take initial steps to meet someone new. Social life may begin anew with accepting invitations from friends and family to attend social gatherings, and that is often a good start.
Your first steps going out again as a singleton may at first seem daunting and even discouraging, but perseverance will help you to adjust to your new life.
